Parque Cervantes December Update
Dec 4th, 2006 by Don Ray

I noticed that the gate was open today and thought I might be able to get some photos. Luckily I got to meet Celso Trejos. He gave Jerry (aka webmaster of Panama End Point) and me a tour of the Park and explained what it was going to have.
I asked Celso if he would mind if I put his picture with the post and he requested that I get a group photo, since this is group effort.

The target date for completion is the end of January. You will see from the photos that there is a fair amount left to do. I think the park design is kind of interesting. You can see from this photo that the grassy area is raised from the walking area by three or more feet.

Each of these huge planter areas is plumbed with an irrigation system. The park is also supposed to be better lit at night. Celso said one of the problems with the old park was that it was not that safe after dark. He said that in the past it was not uncommon to find people having sex or doing drugs in the park at night. Part of the park’s design was to eliminate the possibilities of undesirable activities at night. From what I think I was told today, the park will be patrolled 24/7.
The park is going to have a theater area that will accommodate over 1,000 people.

This is the center of the park. The walking area is going to be a decorative inlaid design. I would assume some sort of brick, but I will have to wait till it is laid to know for sure.

I am really impressed with how nice this park is going to look. Below I am going to crop sections of the group photo so you can get a better look at those that are responsible for building this park. If you run into them, tell them “Nice job on Parque Cervantes”.

The engineer of the project is on the right of the following photo.

Celso is in the yellow shirt in the following photo. Thanks Celso for the tour and allowing me to take photos of the progress.

There are more photos of the park in the Photo album.

Great Job I like interesting projects like that, do more!
Don Ray, a special thanks for this article. Somehow Parque Cervantes sticks in my mind as the heart of David, and it makes me feel good to know they’re doing a good job of it. I look forward to sitting in the shade on a hot day.
Beautiful. It is so nice to see a city manifest itself in public parks and places for the people and not stick the wad of money in governmental palaces and Cadillacs. I think the crew are doing a great job. You will have to do a “before” and “after” set of pics of this place — Parque Cervantes.
SE, Thanks for the comment. I happened to be at the right place at the right time today.
Frank, I am glad you like the the park is looking. I think it is really going to be pretty when it is finished.
Abe,
Thanks for the comment. I will have to remember the before and after suggestion.
[...] This morning I drove down town to update the status on Parque Cervantes. You may remember on my last post in December, I was told that the target was the end of January. The new target is March 19th to be ready for El Dia de San José and the David Fair. Good Luck. A lot of work has been done, but there is still a lot to do. [...]
