All That Chiriquí Jazz
Nov 24th, 2006 by Don Ray
Yesterday evening, Café Romeros hosted a couple of very talented jazz artists. Tony Murgas was on the Piano and Boris Espinosa was on the saxophone. They form the Jazz Fantasy Duo.

I received an email from Antonio Singh yesterday notifying me of this performance at Café Romero in the Romero super market. I arrived a little before 7:30 and took a few photos and recorded a few videos to give you an idea of some of the talent that is in the Chiriquí area.
This was one of many promotions that is taking place to promote the Boquete Jazz Festival that will take place in February of 2007. The next event is on the 30th (Moon Valley Jazz Night).
Antonio was the master of ceremonies and the performance was broadcast on his radio show at 7:30 PM.
Here is Antonio talking to his radio audience and setting up for the performance. The performance this evening was a Jazz Duo that included Sax and Keyboard. Both artists were very accomplished.

I took a few photos of some of the audience during an intermission.

Here is the youngest jazz aficionado in attendance.

So how did they sound? Well you be the judge. Here are four snippets I videoed. Total playing time is a little over 8 minutes. I definitely need more memory so I can capture more. I filled up my 1 gig card last night, but this should give you a flavor of the evening. The audience was provided with complementary wine and cheese snacks. A great time was had by all.
While you are waiting for the video to download, you might as well go pour yourself a glass of wine and pretend you are in the audience. I apologize that some electrical feedback was picked up and you will not hear the best quality. Take it from me they were very good.

Most enjoyable, Don Ray. Tony and Boris make some beautiful music. Thank you much for sharing it with us.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Sounds wonderful, wish I could have been there!
They were very good. I had a great time. I am looking forward to the music on the 30th.
Thanks for leaving a comment.
Hello Cold Toes,
I give something warm for your toes, before you will come on my pages

Have a nice weekend!
Hahaha. How thoughtful of you. While I love to see your photos, I can tell that the temperature in you part of the world is really getting ready to drop.
Your photo should take care of my toes and prevent the frostbite from looking at your photos.
I think you manage it so well because of your warm heart.
¡ S H A Z A M !, Don Ray, those guys are fantastic.
Eat your heart out, Stan Getz. All they need now is Astrud Gonzalez sitting in for Astrud Gilberto and they could start a new jazz craze.
We recently moved from Boquete back to Costa Rica and Ur column and this video especially brought back some warm memories.
Please do some more videos.
Gracias.

Camera! Lights! Action!
Your site is becoming quite the multimedia experience. Thanks for sharing, Don Ray.
I especially liked their version of Leon Russell’s “A Song For You”.
Allen, now why on earth would you move from Boquete to Costa Rica. I am sure there must be a good reason and I am probably just slow today.
Gordo, I enjoyed all of their music. I think I could enjoy myself listening to their music any day.
No, Don Ray, Ur not slow today.
We moved back to Costa Rica because we missed Costa Rica and all our friends and family there.
My wife is a Tica and I am an adopted Tico (of the Tico Tejano variety).
It was not an easy decision, believe me. We really enjoyed living in Boquete for the four years that we lived there.
It took six months to find a house to rent in Costa Rica that we really liked. Here’s where we live now, high up in the mountains –

And 10-4 on Gordo for recognizing Leon Russell’s musical gift.

You just can’t beat those Ticas! I can understand wanting to be close to family. I just say thank goodness for the Internet.
Your photos are great. You have quite a view!
